Life satisfaction and depression among the oldest-old : The mediating effect of gerotranscendence

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the associations of daily stress, gerotranscendence, life satisfaction and depression among the oldest-old and to analyze the mediating effect of gerotranscendence. For the purpose of the study, the survey was conducted and the data were collected from 234 oldest-old by using non-random and purposive sampling method. The data was analyzed using SPSS for descriptive statistics, correlation and multiple regression analysis. The results of the study indicated that daily stress and gerotranscendence were significant predictors in explaining in the variance of life satisfaction and depression. In addition, gerotranscendence was a statistically significant mediator in the association of between daily stress and depression, and between daily stress and life satisfaction. Findings of the study showed that depression and life satisfaction among the oldest-old was significantly influenced by daily stress and gerotranscendence.
Therefore, to improve quality of life in terms of depression and life satisfaction among the oldest-old, not only reducing daily stress but also strengthening gerotranscendence need to be considered. Finally, based on the findings of the study, implications for practices and recommendations of further study were provided.
